Hair Loss in Men
How I Gained My Confidence Back when Suffering from Hair Loss.
It all started one morning in 1993 when I first experienced
hair loss. I noticed a few hairs on my pillow as
I got out of bed. At that moment I ignored it, thinking I was just
paranoid. I read somewhere that it's natural to shed hair, since
it grows back.
A few weeks went by and as I was brushing my hair, I noticed
my hair brush started to accumulate more and more hair. I looked
down at the sink drain and saw a few more hairs and thought to myself,
nah it couldn’t happen to me. I'm only 23, five years out of high
school. I still got at least ten - twenty something years to go
before I need to start worrying.
Another week went by and got up one morning to do my daily routine.
I looked in the bathroom mirror and my hairline seemed a little
higher. I peered closer in the mirror, and the light penetrated
my hair at a certain angle. And there it was... in all its glory
for the entire world to see... my scalp was having a coming out
party! Right then and there, it hit me like a ton of bricks, I was
going bald.
This was the start of one of the most stressfull times in my
young life. When you're in your twenties, it was supposed to be
fun times. You're supposed to be thinking about the college life
and partying. I felt young, but it was like somebody put my scalp
in the time machine and set it 20 years ahead!
Every time I looked in the mirror, my confidence was shot. The
bald jokes racing in my mind at 100 miles per hour. And the worst
thing about this, I knew I would have a tough time dating because
I was considered “different.” Let's face it, a guy in his 20s with
thinning hair doesn't exactly make the ladies melt.
It was going to be a rough road ahead of me.
The Bald Gene is Looking for a Few Good Men
Back
then, I thought it was tragic to experience hair loss at
a young age. Maybe it didn't affect you that badly or maybe you
had less drama. But however your story went, we are all in the same
boat. We are the chosen ones, unlucky enough to get recruited by
the bald gene.
Yup, this is the same gene that wreaks havoc on men’s scalps
causing receding hairlines, thinning hair, and bald crowns. But
hey, it affects 40 million men, so at least you’re not alone, right?
Heh.
Chances are if you have bald relatives, you probably new this
day was coming. For me, my dad was bald but someone told me that
it comes from the mom's side of the family. Yah, right.
So the next couple of years, I was spending time trying to hide
that bald spot and thinning hair with products such as hair thickening
shampoo and hair masking lotions. I was doing everything I could
to reduce the light exposing my naked scalp. If there ever was a
product invented for hiding baldness, believe me, I tried it.
But as time went on, I realized that these were only temporary
solutions that wouldn't last as I experienced more hair loss.
I could only cover up so much before I knew I would lose it all.
I was tormented with stress and obsessed with my thinning hair which
probably caused more hair loss!
Reasons for Hair Loss - Why Do Men Lose their Hair?
I thought, it’s not fair- I'm only in my 20s, this should only
happen to men in their 40s or 50s. I'm still young and need to look
my age.
So I did my research on the Internet, trying to find out why
I was going bald.
Here was my findings:
You can blame it all on the chemical called Dihydrotestosterone
(DHT) which is a natural metabolite of the body. Basically DHT kills
the hair follicle by preventing any kind of nutrients to the follicle
which inhibits healthy hair growth. It's like preventing a plant
from getting any food, water and sun... you get the idea. If your
hair follicle is not resistant to DHT, then you will go bald.
So how do we stop DHT and stop hair loss?
Back then I didn't have many options or none that I knew about.
Then a brand new product hit the market with much hype. This product
was called Rogaine and I was so excited that I could finally get
my confidence back.
I was willing to try anything to stop this hair loss train wreck.
I went to see the doctor to get a prescription, then went to my
local pharmacy to buy it. I walked out of there thinking I was armed
with a secret weapon that would save mankind.
To my frustration, it didn't work very well. I went back online
and did research on case studies and found out for most people it
only keeps more hair from falling out, but doesn't regrow hair very
well. I wish someone would have told me that before I forked over
hundreds of dollars. Month after month, using this "secret
weapon" I didn't see any change in hair growth.
Although this didn't work for me, it doesn't mean it won't work
for you. If you are in the very early stages of hair loss, you may
be a good candidate for Rogaine or another product called Propecia.
You would have to consult with a doctor to see if its right for
you.
However, be aware there are possible side effects when taking
these products. You should go to the product websites and read as
much as you can about it before moving forward. Oh and one last
thing, you’ll need to continue taking this for the rest of your
life or you will go bald again. Bummer.
Hair loss and it's Affect on Society
As the search for the solution to my hair loss problem continued,
I was tormented by how I would be looked upon. That's just me, image
is important and I didn't want to be the only guy in my circle of
friends that was genetically different. Always being the blunt of
everyone's jokes is not fun.
In this society, everyone wants to look their best, no one wants
to be bald or look old beyond their years. Unfortunately, a person
with a full head of hair is treated differently than a bald person.
They have certain advantages, whether it is in dating or in a job
interview situation.
In an even playing field, who do you think is going to get picked
more often 9 times out of 10? Take two people with the same qualifications,
with baldness being the only difference. I'll put money on the guy
with hair any day of the week.
This society is unfair but it has been like this for decades.
If this weren't true, they would have never invented wigs, hair
pieces, or toupees. Hair loss is a multi-billion industry because
no one wants to be bald. Let's face it, when people have to choose,
they won't go for the bald guy. Why do think there's never been
a bald president elect?
You’ve heard the old saying “bald is beautiful.” But why are
most bald guys in movies associated with bad or tough guys? When
most people think bald, they think of old, ugly, different, peculiar,
etc. If you want to be part of the “in” crowd you have to have hair.
Hair Loss Solutions at AIC
This story does have a happy ending. The day that I found AIC
is the day I had a life changing experience. I called them and set
up a free consultation.
I met with a friendly technician who emphathized and listened
to my hair loss problems. She explained everything I wanted to hear
and presented to me a variety of
hair loss
solutions, weighing the pros and cons of each.
After listening to all the options, I set up an appointment to
get my hair back. The procedure itself was an easy experience and
the staff treated me with kindness and care.
After the procedure was finished, I was amazed how natural the
scalp and hairline looked. Not only was the technician a beautician,
she was also an artist. She cut the hair to match the density and
texture of my own hair, and gave me a trendy hair style.
I was ecstatic walking out of there with a full head of natural
looking hair. I finally felt free and I now had options to style
my hair instead of hiding the thinning areas. I was confident that
I could go back on dates and people wouldn't perceive me different
anymore.
